Too Many Days to Count - August 22nd, 2015
Anne and I are home from our trip overseas and I said I would post some new photos when we returned.
We got home to find that a lot of the travertine tiles on the front balcony had cracked! Why? - we don't know for sure, but there is a strong indication that there is a problem with the substrate that the tiles were laid on. I look at them and all I see is $$$$ signs. Chris the builder came and looked at them and left in tears so this is going to be a large and expensive project to rectify the problem.
Currently I'm doing the myriad of jobs that need to be done to get the actual renovation completed - designing and building cupboards, fireplace surrounds, kitchen and laundry kickboards, and completing the stairs - the list isn't endless, but it doesn't seem to be getting any shorter.
In three weeks time, we will have been working on this reno for....one year! Phew. But any how, I promised some photos so here they are....

Hi Phil, just came across your post while searching for Balcony Extensions. My name is Jonathan and live in Brisbane. I'm looking at extending the balcony (1.65m x 8m) of my 1970s brick home. I wasn't quite sure whether to try and extend the existing concrete balcony, or demolish it completely and build a new timber deck. I'm looking to extend outward to make total size about 3m x 8m. I'll need to build a roof over the top. I see you extended, but then suffered issues with tiles cracking. What are your thoughts?

DeleteOur balcony extension comprises the original concrete section (1.4M x 6.0m) and a timber joist extension to make a complete balcony of 4.0m X 6.0m. he timber extension is on bearers with Inex board screwed on top. Our original cracking was caused by water penetration and using very soft travertine tiles. We removed the original tiles and completely waterproofed the whole balcony then lay porcelain travertine look-alike tiles with the joint line aligned to the joints between the Inex board. We placed a silicon control joint where the concrete section abuts the timber section and after 2 years our balcony has been great - no cracking or movement and a great result for us.
I should also mention that your renovation looks fantastic! Completely modernised the house.
